Job Description

Work Location: Mombasa Project

Start date: September 2022

Length of contract: 12 months fixed term contract (based on a 03 months probationary period)

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian action-driven organization, which offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. 26 associations, 23 sections, and 16 branch offices make-up the international movement and work in partnership around 6 operational entities.

Main Purpose

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Mombasa is engaged with supporting the health and well-being of adolescents and young people, in particular ‘key populations’ of sex workers, people who use drugs, and LGBTQ+ people. To evaluate and improve these activities, ongoing social and public health research is undertaken.

A candidate is required to support this research and otherwise enhance MSF’s work. This position will undertake a diverse array of research activities, including data collection, analysis, and dissemination. The successful candidate will also work with MSF’s partners to ensure all research is rigorous, relevant, and respectful.

Accountabilities

  • Work collaboratively as part of a team to identify research priorities and feedback research results
  • Support Epi Activity Manger to Design data collection tools
  • Responsible to pilot, and implement data collection tools
  • Promote research participant recruitment and retention
  • Conduct in-depth interviews with research participants
  • Support quantitative and qualitative data analyses
  • Disseminate research findings through diverse channels (e.g., journal articles, videos, and oral presentations) after validation from Epi Activity Manager
  • Any other tasks related to the area of research as requested by the supervisor

Requirements

Education

  • On-the-job mentorship and training will be provided to develop the successful candidates research skills and knowledge
  • Some education of research methods is desirable but not required

Experience

  • Experience working with ‘key populations’ is required
  • Experience with health and/or social research is desirable but not required

Languages

  • Solid command of written and spoken English is required
  • Solid command of written and spoken Swahili is required

Knowledge

  • Basic computer literacy is required
  • Awareness of the challenges facing ‘key populations’ is required
  • Understanding of Mombasa society, politics, and culture is required
